AIHM Our History

Our History

The AIHM builds on the experience of its longstanding predecessor organizations, the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM) and the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).

For 15 years, the ABIHM was the leading organization to deliver a certification program in integrative holistic medicine to MD and DO physicians. Our work in this area helped to inspire the development of the national board certification in Integrative Medicine now being offered by the American Board of Physician Specialties.

As the ABIHM grew, so did its global network of interprofessional colleagues. Health professionals began an open dialogue about developing education and training beyond MDs and DOs. ABIHM leaders embraced a model of a team-based approach and collaborative care among providers and between disciplines. As the ABIHM evolved, the leaders of the ABIHM and AHMA, who have always been close, reconnected in their shared purpose, and merged in 2014.  Founded in 1978, the AHMA infused the AIHM community with their multidisciplinary membership, and key AHMA leaders were incorporated into the Academy’s board of directors.
